The Story of Leah, my First Boxer Dog
It only took me 46 years to get my first Boxer dog and now I’ll always have a Boxer in the house. In fact we might become a two Boxer dog family pretty soon. If you have never considered a Boxer as your first dog then you might want to read this book.

Just one month into our marriage, I brought home a puppy. Why? We already had a house full of teenager. So Why? Because. I actually did something I used to coach and teach other pet owners NOT to do. I got a dog on impulse, without research, without background checks, and NOT from a shelter. Shame on me.
Do I regret the decision? Nope, not in the least.
For our first Boxer we hit the jackpot. Leah’s registered AKC name is “Princess Leah XVIII” we weren’t very imaginative with her name. Princess was after a dear Boxer my husband knew when he was single, and Leah is kinda after my Dad. His name was Leo, close enough. My Dad always kept a China Boxer figurine on his desk, don’t know what the connection was, but I grew up admiring that fawn Boxer.
Back to Leah, our AMAZING Boxer. I did say she is amazing didn’t I?
Leah tugged at my heartstrings the first day I picked her up and she nuzzled and licked my ear. Why is she amazing? The following reasons are why..
- Didn’t bark until she was two years old. (then she scared herself)
- Trained herself to a leash and collar and NEVER pulls (unlike our JRT, see below)
- She doesn’t jump when people come to the door but..
- … graciously wiggles her butt at them in greeting.
- She stays in the yard and doesn’t run off
- Never barks at dogs when going for a walk
- Never snatches food or dog treats from your hand, but gently gums it out.
- Gentle around little kids
- Will lay on the couch with you all day
- Carries her stuffed animal toys around like puppies
- Talks to you like a person (gotta get this on video someday)
- Loves to ride in the car (the BEST travel dog)
- Isn’t afraid of thunder storms
- Will go outside when it’s raining to pee (you laugh, but it’s a BIG deal)
- Puts up with a ornery Jack Russell Terrier
- Waits patiently and watching, until Brody leaves a dog bone. Then takes it. (see above)
- As a Mother dog she cleans her pups incessantly (literally rubbed the black off her nose)
This Blog is Dedicated to my First Boxer Dog
I could go on and on about Leah and what an amazing dog she is, but I won’t here. This blog is dedicated to her and everything I’ve learned about Boxers in the past five years. I’m become so obsessed with her I’ve even made a personalized Boxer Ornament and mug with her photo on it.
You can actually order one for your dog too and substitute the image.

So welcome to Leah’s world. If you have a Boxer tell me what makes your Boxer the greatest. I’d love to hear from you and include your list to mine on why Boxers make great pets.

Well, I don’t have a boxer, but there is definitely something about them that makes most boxer owners want not just one, but at least 2! Your Leah sounds like not only the perfect boxer, but the perfect dog in general! Thanks for sharing her with us here! I do love boxers, just haven’t had the pleasure of owning one. I’ve always taken in dogs that needed me and so far that hasn’t included any boxers!

Thanks for the comment, Boxer owners are a breed unto themselves. Rarely do I meet someone who has just one Boxer.

Glad you liked it, she is certainly a sweet heart, we are going to take her camping in Colorado for the first time in a couple of weeks. I’m sure that will be several stories. Thanks for commenting and please come back again.

I haven’t had a boxer either, but this dog sounds like it would be right up my alley…..Doing some research into dog breeds, but may go to a pound to see what’s there. I love rescue animals and had one for years. He sounds just like Leah….
